Psychological Factors in Alcoholism

  • Chapter
The Biology of Alcoholism

Abstract

Psychological factors in alcoholism require broader coverage than the genetic factors excellently reviewed in the preceding chapter by Goodwin and Guze. As indicated in that chapter, it is unlikely that chronic, heavy drinking produces any constitutional changes which are transmitted to the offspring. Therefore, the review of genetic factors is limited to the constitutional factors which affect the likelihood of developing alcoholism, seen in a difference between alcoholics and nonalcoholics in the incidence of particular genetically determined characteristics.
