Abstract
Cells engaged in the uptake of particles become the center of acute inflammatory reactions (Metchnikoff, 1905). This phenomenon has been attributed, in part, to the release from phagocytic cells of enzymes previously sequestered within lysosomes (Weissmann, 1967). Exposure of joints to lysosomal extracts results in inflammation and cartilage degradation (Weissmann et al, 1969). Therefore, inhibition of enzyme release from cells which participate in the inflammatory response may modify the inflammation and subsequent tissue injury.
