Abstract
The leitmotiv of this retrospective survey is the phenomenon of neurosecretion. The gradual evolution of our current views on its place in neuroendocrinology will be discussed in terms not of one research career but of two, a husband-and-wife team that ended, after 30 years, with the death of Ernst Scharrer in 1965. As happens so often, the foundations for this investigative work were laid during student days, and its course was shaped by many events unforeseen at the time.
