Abstract
I was a miserable prep school student, much more interested in sports and a good time than in study. In 1916, at the age of 16, I claimed I was 18, the minimal admission age, and went to the Plattsburg summer training camp for army officers, since World War I, for us, was just over the horizon. In the following year I enlisted in the army, missing the entire last year of high school, so in a sense I was a school dropout. Having enlisted in a new National Guard artillery battery and having been to Plattsburg, I was made a line sergeant, since most of the enlisted men and some of the officers had had little or no military experience.
