Poly(Vinyl Chloride) Matrix Membrane Ion-Selective Electrodes

Ion-Selective Electrodes in Analytical Chemistry

Part of the book series: Modern Analytical Chemistry

Abstract

A calcium ion-selective electrode based on a liquid membrane of calcium didecylphosphate sensor dissolved in dioctylphenylphosphonate solvent mediator(1) fulfilled a longstanding need for a reliable monitor of calcium ion activities in medicine and the life sciences. The wide interest in this ion-selective electrode was promoted by the commercial availability of a refined model although its general performance was matched by an electrode(2) with a sensing membrane comprising thenoyltrifluoroacetone sensor plus tributylphosphate plasticizer impregnated in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The PVC matrix membrane was prepared by knife-coating a mixture of PVC with sensor and plasticizer components on a woven fabric and curing the applied coating at 140°C for 30 s.(2–5)
