Summary
The display of information and the mode of control in multi-variable manual control systems may be designed in a parallel or serial manner. Starting from an experimental comparison of these two design principles, which shows a strong increase of the control error in the serial case, a display and control unit is proposed with parallel, integrated display of information and with serial, compatible mode of control. By means of an experiment it is shown that the control quality with this unit is comparable with that of the parallel instrumentation. Furthermore it is suggested that the operator be enabled to vary the stick signal of the display and control unit continuously by his force of manipulation. The effect of this modification was studied by a further experiment.
