Abstract

In his paper on the “Threatened Plants Committee” Professor Heslop-Harrison (1974) emphasized that “for vegetation in general, much the best prescription for survival is conservation in the field.... But we know that the rate of diminution of some habitats is now such that field-conservation of some taxa may soon become impractical”. Therefore one should use the potentialities of botanic gardens as well as private and commercial collections for the conservation of threatened plants through cultivation.
