Sexual Dimorphism in Erotic Function: A Psychosocial Approach

  • Chapter
Progress in Sexology

Part of the book series: Perspectives in Sexuality ((Persp. Sex.))

Abstract

The choice of any particular theoretical or explanatory perspective and its application in a systematic and coherent fashion is a significant decision in all areas of scientific inquiry. As we all know, our theoretical preferences have consequences in that they determine what we decide are the “facts,” what significance the “facts” might have, as well as the relationships between the “facts.” Our theories guide our scientific conduct, they are a set of instructions about what to notice and what to ignore, what is important and what is trivial. The tension between theory and data, hypothesis and test, explanation and example is the chronic condition of scientific activity.
