Abstract
Future population predictions in developed countries indicate an increasing number of people, more commonly women, in the upper age ranges. They almost certainly will be more frail and disabled than the elderly of today. The increase of those 85 years and over between 1971 and 1991 in the United Kingdom will be approximately 46%. From Chebotarev and Sachuk’s survey (1) in the Ukraine the preponderance of women in the upper age range was demonstrated by the finding that at the age of a hundred there are seven times as many women as men. Another interesting phenomenon is the varying age at which women begin to preponderate over men (reckoned as a hundred and twenty women for a hundred men) in different countries. This ranges from the age of forty-three in the German Republic to the age of eighty-three in Southern Ireland. Reasons for this are unknown.
