Abstract

Beginning in 1969, the staff of the Institute of Behavioral Research (IBR) undertook responsibility for a large-scale, prospective study to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for drug abuse (Sells, 1974; Sells and Simpson, 1967). In the course of this research, 43, 943 patients were tracked from admission to termination of treatment, an interval varying from one day, in some cases, to over three years, in others. During treatment-evaluation, studies have been completed for three cohorts, as follows:

  • Cohort 1, 11,383 patients, 23 agencies, admissions between 6–1-69 and 5–31–71

  • Cohort 2, 15,831 patients, 35 agencies, admissions between 6–1-71 and 5–31–72

  • Cohort 3, 16,729 patients, 53 agencies, admissions between 6–1-72 and 3–31–73

In the fall of 1974, a follow-up study of the first two cohorts was initiated, with samples of approximately 2000 patients from each cohort. The field work for Cohort 1 is currently in progress.
