An IR and EM Study of the Reactivity of Some Divalent Metal Hydroxides with Silica Gel

  • Chapter
Reactivity of Solids

Abstract

Reactions under reflux conditions between silica gel and solid hydroxides of Ca, Mg, Cd, Cu, Zn and Be were followed progressively by IR and EM techniques and the final products characterised. Identifiable silicates were obtained from the hydroxides of Ca (a tobermorite-like layer silicate C-S-H (I)), Mg (a hectorite-like smectite) and Zn (hemimorphite). Possible reaction mechanisms are discussed.
