Abstract
Cobalt doped sapphire is shown to undergo reversible redox reactions by treatment of the system in hydrogen and oxygen atmospheres above 1100°C. At temperatures above 1550°C irreversible formation of new phases of the spinel type destroy the reversibility of the redox process. The reduction
