Abstract

A viral etiology for diabetes mellitus was first proposed some 50 years ago by Gunderson,1 who documented an association between community outbreaks of mumps and the occurrence of the juvenile form of the disease (JODY).2 Since that time, epidemiologic observations and annotations in the literature have repeatedly emphasized the role of mumps virus in the causation of diabetes.3–8 More recently, other common human viruses have been implicated in its pathogenesis.9–13
