Abstract

Although a large body of information has been gathered by physicians and scientists during the first half century of the insulin era, human diabetes mellitus is still a poorly understood disease. Most informed individuals agree that although the tendency to develop diabetes may be inherited, environmental factors are also involved in the etiology and the progression of the syndrome’s symptom complex, of which hyperglycemia is the unifying phenomenon. The importance of heredity stems from the well-known familial incidence of diabetes. The importance of environmental factors rests upon evidence suggesting a viral etiology of juvenile-onset diabetes, and upon evidence linking the frequency of maturity-onset diabetes with the degree of nutritional (i.e., caloric) prosperity.
