Postnatal Growth

  • Chapter
Perinatal Physiology

Abstract

From conception, growth is a continuum and by no means a steady process. Particularly in infancy and the preadolescent period, we are inclined to view growth as a concept of size attained. What is the average body weight of healthy full-term infants at 1 year of age ? These measures, and their distribution, are valuable, for they indicate progress along a growth curve. Such distance curves, however, are rarely dramatic and may give a false impression of, for example, steady growth.
