Part of the book series: Topics in Infectious Disease ((CTID))

Abstract

Chapter 1, on the history of the mycobacteria, has made it evident that mycobacteria are present in soil, water, and feed for animals. Contamination of human foodstuffs, eggs, milk, and milk products had been established, and it was well known that these organisms infected or colonized many hosts. In the interval between discovery of these acid-fast bacteria and 1940, bacteriologists had also established their infection and colonization of humans.
