Abstract
Research in perinatal tumor induction experienced a new impetus in past years through several important discoveries in experimental chemical and viral oncogenesis. The following discoveries probably had the greatest impact: (1) The experimental proof that leukemia tumor viruses can be transmitted in rodents by infection from animal to animal, i.e., horizontal transmission, but also by inheritance of the viral genome from generation to generation, i.e., vertical transmission. (2) The successful transplacental induction of various organ tumors in rodents by alkylating chemical carcinogens (Mohr and Althoff, 1964, 1965; Druckrey et al., 1966). (3) The discovery of the high susceptibility of rat fetuses to the oncogenic effect of ethylnitrosourea (Ivankovic and Druckrey, 1968).
