Abstract

Frequently ignored in drug programs and prison reform groups is the addict’s or prisoner’s lack of apparent concern toward his violent or impulsive behavior. Among treatment personnel, there seem to be two extreme views. One, currently not in vogue, is that these individuals are unchangeable, dangerous persons who should be locked away from society forever. The other view disregards the real potential for violence and gives these individuals complete, uncritical, and unquestioning acceptance, without which they allegedly cannot be changed.

Special thanks to Dr. E. Khantzian for discussions which helped in the writing of this chapter.
