Abstract

So far, we have considered only problems involving a single particle in one dimension. To discuss the electrons in atoms and molecules, we will of course have to confront several particles in three dimensions. In this chapter, we remove one restriction by considering three-dimensional one-particle problems. This will enable us to treat one-electron atomic systems in Chapter 6. Then in Chapter 7, we will turn to the quantum-mechanical treatment of systems of more than one particle. Chapter 8 will bring us finally to many-electron atoms and the periodic table and that is the gateway to chemistry.

It was a queer-shaped little creature, and held out its arms and legs in all directions.
