DNA Evolution Data and Its Relevance to Mammalian Phylogeny

  • Chapter
Phylogeny of the Primates

Abstract

What are the molecular events which result in the evolutionary changes which we see as the appearance of new species? The current view of the role of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) indicates that evolutionary changes at the organism level must have been preceded by some quantitative or qualitative change in DNA. Our interest was to determine the pattern of DNA changes with evolution in the hope that the evidence obtained might give some insights into evolutionary mechanisms.
