Abstract

Simulium damnosum is the main African vector of onchocerciasis. The name S. damnosum, which is used throughout the present paper for the sake of simplicity, covers in fact a relatively large number of forms whose taxonomic status is yet uncertain. Most observations reported here deal with the S. damnosum complex forms found in West Africa and, especially, with those presently called “Sirba”, “Nile”, “Soubré” and “Bandama”.
