Pathology of Tumors of the Testis in Children

  • Chapter
Cancer in Childhood

Abstract

According to Young et al.1 2 to 5% of testicular tumors occur in children. Collins and Pugh2 found that, of 952 testicular tumors, 20 (2%) occurred in patients under 15 years of age and, of 22 paratesticular sarcomas, six (27%) were in children in this age group. At the Canadian Tumor Reference Centre, 31 (7%) of 456 testicular tumors and seven (29%) of 24 paratesticular sarcomas were in patients under 15 years. Table 1 shows the Reference Centre’s series of 38 testicular and paratesticular tumors in children, grouped according to histologic type. Thirty-one were testicular neoplasms. Five of the six rhabdomyosarcomas and two of the three neoplasms listed as “other” were paratesticular.
