Abstract

The use of mass spectrographic procedures for determining the elemental compositions of rocks, minerals, and allied materials, rather than for investigation of isotopic inter-relationships, is one of the newer developments in analytical geochemistry. Dempster [1] clearly recognised the possibility of utilising spark source mass spectrography for elemental analysis over thirty years ago, but the technique has been applied to the analysis of geological materials only during the last decade [2–5]. The particular features of this technique which have commended it to geochemists are

  1. (i)

the very wide range of elements that can be detected and, if required, determined quantitatively in a single analytical run,

  2. (ii)

the inability to ‘miss’ any element present in the analysed material in an amount greater than the limit of detection for that element, and

  3. (iii)

the high sensitivity of the method for almost all elements.
