Abstract

This book has been concerned primarily with the use of methods based on the detection and monitoring of various electromagnetic radiations for the elemental and crystallographic analysis of minerals. As an inevitable result, the traditional methods of chemical analysis of such materials have received scant attention, and it is my purpose in this chapter to rectify this omission and to try to bring some perspective into a picture which has been built up rather as pieces in a jig-saw puzzle. In addition, I shall discuss some of the topics which other authors have tended to take for granted, in particular sample preparation and sample decomposition.
