Abstract
The counting of photons by photoemission into vacuum and subsequent electron multiplication has long been an accomplished fact. The solid-state version of the photomultiplier, using high-field impact ionization by photoexcited carriers, has been extremely difficult to achieve. Only some fringe evidence of its realizability has been published in the last few years. This problem will be discussed in more detail in Chapter 9.
