Abstract
Interactions between the pituitary-adrenal and pituitary-gonadal functions as well as between those and the pituitary-thyroid axis were the subjects of many studies in recent decades. Both synergistic and antagonistic influences have been observed in animal experiments which suggested an extremely complicated regulatory process behind these events (Velardo 1957, D’Angelo and Hughes 1963, Fortier et al. 1970, etc.). Concerning the effect of oestradiol on the pituitary-adrenal axis, it is known that oestradiol administration led to the enlargement of adrenals, on the one hand, but depending on the dosages, it may enhance or inhibit the adrenal steroidogenesis under both in vivo and in vitro conditions, on the other hand (Kitay 1963, Amesbury et al. 1965, etc.).
