Abstract
The intent is to lay a philosophic foundation for the need and place of computer simulation in both the technological endeavors of the materials science field and in the educational life of students proceeding toward careers in this area. We shall begin by discussing the differences and similarities exhibited by the materials science field and other specializations of science and technology. The philosophy presented applies very generally to the whole field of applied science so that the concepts and notions developed in the frame of reference of materials science are readily transferable to the broader field.
