Abstract
When we organized the symposium on which this volume is based* we hoped to accomplish two things. One was to reconcile some of the different conclusions that have been reached by proponents of the psychophysiological and hydraulic theories of motivation concerning aggressive behavior, and the other was to summarize our knowledge concerning the physiology of fighting and defeat in a definitive fashion. As we look over the results, we see that we have succeeded at least partially in the first endeavor, as the chapters by Scott and Moyer show. With respect to the second, these papers, far from presenting final answers, open up a whole new set of research fields concerning the behavioral, physiological, and biochemical aspects of fighting and defeat.
