Single-Crystal and High-Temperature Gas-Phase Raman Spectroscopy

  • Chapter
Essays in Structural Chemistry

Abstract

The use of lasers as a source of the exciting radiation in commercial Raman spectrometers has led to the adoption of Raman spectroscopy as a routine physical technique in chemistry. However, two major developments which have arisen from this application of lasers have yet to be widely used by chemists. They are gas-phase Raman spectroscopy (notably at temperatures above ambient) and oriented single-crystal Raman spectroscopy. It is probable that the investigation of matrix-isolated species by Raman spectroscopy will also become of importance in the characterization of unstable species and high temperature vapours.
