Design Considerations and Long-Term in Vivo Studies with the Disposable Spiral Membrane Lung

  • Chapter
Blood Oxygenation

Abstract

Clinical blood oxygenation has now been routinely practiced for nearly two decades. Pathologic findings after extracorporeal perfusion by bubble and disc blood oxygenation techniques suggest that significant morbidity and mortality is due to giamage to blood elements (1). Such perfusion methods cannot be used for long periods of time. Long term perfusion is needed in various clinical situations; for instance, a patient after a heart operation, who is unable to tolerate being taken off bypass after corrective surgery. Such patient would benefit from continued extracorporeal cardiopulmonary assistance.
