Corrosion of Type 316 Stainless Steel with Surface Heat Flux in 1200°F Flowing Sodium

  • Chapter
Corrosion by Liquid Metals

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the corrosion behavior of Type 316 stainless steel in flowing sodium. The main features of the experimental loop from which the data are obtained are that (a) the sodium at the inlet to the test section is saturated with corrosion products, (b) the surface temperature of the test sample varies along its length and is always higher than the local bulk sodium temperature, and (c) the geometry of the test section permits the determination of the convective diffusion mass transfer coefficient.
