Abstract
The word corrosion means the destruction of a material under the chemical or electrochemical action of the surrounding environment. For this reason corrosion is a subject of technical and economic interest as well as of scientific interest. This chapter gives examples of the variety of corrosion phenomena, traces historical developments, describes the economic significance, and presents the results of illustrative experiments.
