Abstract
The possibility of isolating pure antibodies is of interest in several respects. Pure preparations are, first of all, necessary for a detailed study of the properties and structure of these highly specific serum proteins. The availability of pure antibodies considerably facilitates immunological investigations, for example, the study of antibody—antigen interaction. Finally, it should be recalled that antibodies are widely used as highly specific reagents, for example, to detect antigen in tissues, and also as effective therapeutic agents against many infectious diseases. In any case, pure antibody preparations are obviously more convenient to use than the presently employed immune serums or their fractions, which contain considerable quantities of nonspecific proteins in addition to antibody.
