Abstract
The oldest rocks in the Kurile Islands are Upper Cretaceous deposits developed in the Lesser Kurile chain. They were first recognized only at the end of the last century (Jimbo, 1890), and later they were characterized faunally by Sasa (1934) who distinguished the “Shikotan formation” and the “Matakotan eruptive rocks.”
