Abstract
The manufacture and applications of three types of polythene liquid cells, for use in far-infrared spectroscopy, are described. The cells are very cheap and simple to make, and may reasonably be considered as disposable. They are particularly useful for the examination of air-sensitive liquids. No elaborate equipment is required for the manufacture of these cells, though the method outlined below is capable of considerable refinement should this be thought necessary in a particular case. The three types we have used are (1) nominally-fixed pathlength cells, (2)multiple-fixed pathlength cells, (3) variable pathlength cells. The cells described below are designed for use with a Grubb-Parsons DM4 spectrometer so dimensions might have to be altered for other instruments.
