The Role of Solvents at Electrodes

  • Chapter
  • 224 Accesses

Abstract

Few of the electrodes known and used in electrochemistry are not covered with water or some other solvent. Yet in the description of electrode phenomena, the solvent has largely been disregarded, possibly because there are no methods analogous to those available for ions [1] with which to determine the solvation of electrodes quantitatively. Exceptions are the attempts that have been made to evaluate the contribution of the χ potential to the total potential drop at the metal-solution interface, but even here there is still controversy as to magnitude and even sign (cf. Chapter 5 on potentials of zero charge).
