Abstract

Many years have passed since Selye (1937) first described the nonspecific generalized response of the pituitary-adrenal system to stress, and the general acceptance that this response plays an important role in adaptation. Since those days, interest in the study of the complex mechanism responsible for the secretion of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland has continued undiminished.
