Abstract

The second law of thermodynamics establishes important criteria for equilibrium in isolated thermodynamic systems. By isolated we mean a system which does not exchange heat or work with the external medium. Consequently in such a system the internal energy U, the volume V, and the generalized coordinate X (which corresponds to a form of work other than work of expansion) are constant.
