Abstract
The consequences of inhaling asbestos and erionite have alerted the scientific community and the general public to the potential for adverse health effects from other inorganic fibrous materials such as ceramic fibers and whiskers. The health effects of asbestos and erionite were initially suspected from human evidence. However, the long latency between first exposure and development of diagnosable lung disease makes it inappropriate to wait for evidence of human disease before remedial action is taken. While it is possible in some cases to substitute fibrous materials with their non-fibrous counterparts, fibrous materials will remain an integral part of our environment. It is, therefore, prudent to test the toxic properties of newly exploited natural and man-made fibers.
