Growth Factor and Growth Factor Receptor Expression in Transformed Rat Mesothelial Cells

Abstract

Mesothelial cell transformation induced by asbestos and other mineral fibers has been shown to occur both in vitro (Paterour et al., 1985) and in vivo (Craighead, 1987a; Mossman et al.,1990). Transformation in vivo may occur through direct interaction of the fibers with target mesothelial cells or may occur through an indirect interaction of fibers with other cell populations (such as inflammatory cells) that produce cellular mediators, such as cytokines or oxygen radicals (Mossman et al., 1989; Jaurand, 1989). Very little is known about the mechanism of transformation of mesothelial cells by either direct or indirect interactions with mineral fibers; a fact that has hampered the search for “safe” asbestos substitutes. An understanding of the biology of mesothelioma induction is critical in order to correctly assess the health effects associated with environmental and occupational exposure to natural and man-made fibers.
