Combined Effect of Strain and Confinement on the Phonon Spectra of IV/IV Superlattices: Towards a Quantitative Description

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSB,volume 253))

Abstract

The lattice dynamical properties of Si/Ge superlattices are studied by means of the interplanar force constants recently calculated ab-initio for strained bulk Si and Ge. The longitudinal modes of (001)-grown superlattices, with different strain distributions, can be accurately studied. We compare our results with available experimental data. We discuss the possible extension of our conclusions to other IV/IV superlattices, particularly to α-Sn/Ge.
