Abstract

Discharges provide a powerful means for the production of unstable molecular species to be used as samples for spectroscopy 1. However, they could seem not useful for the investigation of atoms, for which more “clean” experimental environments are provided by other configurations such as traps or beams. On the contrary, discharges still play an important role for atomic spectroscopy, whenever the final goal is not necessarily an investigation with ultrahigh precision. Discharges are the straightforward ways for the production of atoms from molecular dissociation (H2,O2 ...), they can be useful to produce refractory elements by sputtering in hollow cathode configurations, or to produce ionized species. It is worth noting that, thanks to the high electron temperature in the discharge, also excited states are populated and ready to be investigated by laser techniques.
