Abstract
These lectures review the fundamentals of the Skyrme model of baryons and its relationship with the non-relativistic quark model and the large-N QCD. Special emphasis is placed on the problems the model experiences in perturbative treatment of SU (3) breaking. It is argued that the strange quark mass m s is large enough to invalidate first-order perturbation theory in m s. Because of the failure of the perturbation theory, an alternate approach to strangeness is introduced where hyperons emerge as kaon-soliton bound states. Various applications of this approach are discussed, with emphasis on its striking similarity with the quark model.
