Abstract
Forest tree tissue culture in India is being carried out in several universities and research institutions. The main thrust of these activities is directed towards micropropagation, using explants from both adult and juvenile embryonic or seedling tissues. The tree species used in these studies cover a wide spectrum which include desert and arid zone trees, leguminous trees and also trees used for timber, fuel, paper and pulp and in rayon industries.
The micropropagation of hardwood forest species is still a controversial issue because of the high cost of plantlet production, which is mainly a result of the labor-intensive stages in the process, and because of the uncertainties regarding the likely gains. This requires careful field evaluation of tissue culture-raised plants with respect to growth rates and wood quality, depending on the end-uses.
The results of small-scale outplantings at the National Chemical Laboratory with tissue culture-raised plants of Dendrocalanuts strictus, Eucalyptus spp., Salvadora persica, and Tamarindus indica have been presented, together with results of the different approaches followed in making the micropropagation processes cost-effective and beneficial for use in forestry programs.
