Abstract
Clinical observation on various genetic combinations of sensory neural hearing impairments with pigmentation disorders (Schuknecht, 1974) as well as animal mutants (Schrott and Spoendlin, 1987; Steel et al., 1987) indicate a crucial position of the melanocytes onto the sensory areas. The audiological findings of minor susceptibility to noise exposure by pigmented animals and humans suggest an influence of melanin on inner ear physiology and pathophysiology (Conlee et al., 1986; Hood et al., 1976; Westerstrom, 1984; Tota and Bocci, 1967).
