Abstract
In the last few years there have been a number of new descriptions of the physiological properties of the efferent systems projecting to the mammalian auditory receptor organ (Robertson, 1984; Robertson and Gummer, 1985; Liberman and Brown, 1986). Without detracting in any way from the efforts of earlier investigators, it is fair to say that these recent studies have benefited from a number of advances since the early landmark recordings of single efferent fibre activity (Fex, 1962; Rupert et al., 1968).
