Abstract
Stimulated mast cells break down ATP and release adenosine within 60 seconds after antigen or A23187 challenge1, and adenosine itself potentiates mast cell pre-formed mediator release2. Because 5-amino-4-imidazolecarboxamide riboside (AICA riboside) has been shown to alter metabolism of adenosine and accelerate the repletion of ATP pools in other tissues3, its effect on mast cell function was examined. We chose to study the effects of acute and chronic AICA riboside exposure in mast cells to determine whether changes in cell purine content or metabolism would alter cell function.
