Abstract

Although some earlier attempts had been made to develop an effective treatment for fascioliasis (see Chapter 1), experimental chemotherapy for trematode infections of domestic animals began between 1921 and 1926 with the discovery of the anthelmintic effect of carbon tetrachloride and hexachloroethane (Hall, 1921; Ernst, 1925; Thienel, 1926; Montgomery, 1926). Before the discovery of these remedies, survival of sheep and cattle depended on the individual judgment of stockmen during normal years, and catastrophic destruction of millions of animals was observed during wet years (Taylor, 1964). Despite their variable efficacy and relatively high toxicity, both drugs served the animal industry for many years, and appreciable advances in the chemotherapy of trematode diseases, producing safer and more efficient compounds, were only achieved during the past 20 years.
