Novel Techniques for Breeding of Microorganisms and Application of the Microorganisms to Production of Glutathione

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 87))

Abstract

Recent techniques such as gene engineering and/or cell fusion have made it possible to manipulate genes and to intentionally make microorganisms having various properties which we want. Using these useful techniques, we have succeeded in breeding powerful microorganisms which can produce high levels of ATP and/or glutathione (a detoxicating drug of liver). We also have developed novel techniques for the manipulation of the nucleus and the cytosol of yeasts. This article deals with these techniques and production of glutathione by the engineered strain of E. coli.
