Abstract

“Kernikterus” is the term coined by Schmorl (1903) to characterize the autopsy findings in six of 120 infants who had died with icterus gravis neonatorum and exhibited yellow staining of selected nuclear centers of the brain. Orth (1875) previously reported an example of similar yellow nuclear staining in a single infant, and Esch (1908) has been credited with the correlation of the antemortem clinical features with the postmortem findings of kernicterus, as it is now known (Gerrard, 1952).
